Both sagebrush and aspen trees blanket large swaths of the Wasatch Mountains. Large groups of aspens often spring from a single root system. Although the individual trees rarely live longer than 140 years, their root systems can persist for millennia. One aspen colony in Utah, spreading across more than 150 acres, is over 80,000 years old. It is thought to be one of the largest and oldest living organisms in the world.
